Success Depends On What You Can Do for Your Country

Predsjedniče Komšić, predsjedniče Džaferovic, predsjedavajući Zvizdić, predsjednice Cvijanović, premijeru Novalić, uvaženi gosti, dragi prijatelji, dobrodošli.

Svakog četvrtog jula, slavimo vrijednosti koje su inspirisale stvaranje naše nacije. 

As President Trump states in our National Security Strategy, “Liberty, free enterprise, equal justice under the law, and the dignity of every human life are central to who we are as a people.  We will never lose sight of our values and their capacity to inspire, uplift, and renew.” 

(prevod: Kao što je predsjednik Trump rekao u našoj Strategiji nacionalne sigurnosti: “Sloboda, slobodno poduzetništvo, pravda za sve i dostojanstvo svakog pojedinačnog ljudskog života ključne su vrijednosti onoga što nas čini nacijom kakva jesmo. Nikada nećemo smetnuti s uma naše vrijednosti i njihovu snagu koja inspiriše, daje nadu i okrepljuje”.)

Ove godine takođe slavimo pedesetu godišnjicu slijetanja čovjeka na Mjesec. Slavimo ostvarenje nevjerovatnog cilja kojeg je postavio predsjednik John F. Kenedy.

U svom govoru na Univerzitetu Rice, na kojem sam i ja studirao, rekao je: ““We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills.”  

(prevod: “Odlučili smo da u ovoj deceniji sletimo na Mjesec i da uradimo i neke druge stvari, ne zato što ih je lako uraditi, nego baš zato što nije; jer taj cilj će poslužiti objedinjavanju i odmjeravanju naše najveće snage i najboljih vještina”)

JFK je znao da će takav odvažan cilj takođe biti inspiracija, nada i okrepljenje. Osam godina je četristo hiljada naučnika, inženjera i tehničara radilo zajedno da bi čovjek dosegao Mjesec.   

Današnja granica u istraživanju svemira je planeta Mars.  Mars Rover bi trebao sletjeti na nama najbližu planetu u ovo doba naredne godine, u krater koji je, u stvari, dobio ime po jednom mjestu u BiH, Jezeru.  Ko može da predvidi kakva će inspiracija to dostignuće biti za buduće generacije?  Sve vas pozivam da večeras pogledate našu naučnu postavku i da vas inspirišu mladi bh. naučnici budućnosti.

Oni inspiraciju crpe iz američkih kutaka i STEM učionica koje opremamo širom BiH.  Podržavamo obrazovanje u oblasti nauke, tehnologije, inžinjerstva i matematike kako bismo učenike i nastavnike pripremili za budućnost.

Danas BiH ima sopstveni odvažni cilj koji ne zahtijeva putovanje u svemir:  to je napredak ka članstvu u NATO savezu i Evropskoj uniji.

Sjedinjene Države podržavaju ovaj cilj jer, da parafraziram predsjednika Kennedija, taj cilj će poslužiti objedinjavanju i odmjeravanju vaše najveće snage i vaših najboljih vještina. 

Uspjeh Bosne i Hercegovine zavisi ne od toga šta međunarodna zajednica može da uradi, nego, kako je rekao JFK: “od onoga što vi možete uraditi za svoju zemlju”.

Every July 4^th, we celebrate the values that launched our nation. 

As President Trump states in our National Security Strategy, “Liberty, free enterprise, equal justice under the law, and the dignity of every human life are central to who we are as a people.  We will never lose sight of our values and their capacity to inspire, uplift, and renew”

This year we also celebrate the 50^th anniversary of man landing on the moon.  We celebrate the incredible achievement of a goal set by President John F. Kennedy. 

In a speech at Rice University, my alma mater, he said, “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills.”  

JFK knew that an audacious goal would also inspire, uplift and renew.  And within eight years, 400,000 scientists, engineers and technicians rallied to put men on the moon.   

Today’s horizon in space exploration is Mars.  The Mars Rover is due to land on our closest neighbor this time next year, in a crater that, in fact, is named after a town right here in BiH, Jezero.  And who’s to say what that feat will inspire future generations to achieve?  I invite you all to stroll our Science Fair today to get inspired by the young BiH scientists of tomorrow.

They are getting inspired in the American Corners and STEM classrooms we are equipping across BiH.  We are supporting science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to better prepare students and teachers for the future.

Today, BiH has its own audacious goal, which will not require space travel:   advancing to join NATO and the EU. 

The United States supports that goal because, to paraphrase JFK, that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of your energies and your skills.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s success depends not on what the international community can do.  It will depend – in JFK’s words – on “what you can do for your country.”

The United States stands ready to support you.  As our National Security Strategy states, “The United States offers partnership to those who share our aspirations for freedom and prosperity.”
